Isn’t it nice to have a high speed internet connection? I am still working too late but I like the space to work on my computer without having to tie up my hosts phone line or use theirs. I just climb into bed and work. My bedroom here has a nice peek-a-boo view of the coast. Apparently an ocean view ups the price phenomenally…a flash of water and sky is not as pricey but still more than no view at all.
When I woke up it was cloudy and cool but the sun came out in patches. We actually dried some laundry on the line. When I did my walk about in town I was glad I had my jacket. It felt like rain. I started out hiking to a house I had seen my first night with some really amazing driftwood art. I decided that I wanted to meet the person who built these quaint little places. Turns out it was a bed and breakfast, the Weeloveitto B&B. When I knocked Bob answered the door. It is his wife Nattanya who is the artist and she was out of town. Ah! The yard and gardens are beautiful, right on the water with the whole property filled with these whimsical creations pulled off of the shore. At this point in the trip I am more interested in the art and the driftwood than the B&B although it looked like a great place to check out. If I ever come back on vacation…and Angela doesn’t have room for me…I would definitely stay there.
I walked around town a lot today and got a much better view of that ship, or maybe it is another one, being filled with gravel. Can you see the conveyor system off to the side? It is incredible. Apparently the gravel pit is on first nations land and most of the gravel from here goes to US markets along the west coast. I hope the people whose land is being used are getting a fare price.
My main mission today was to see the Museum. It covers the journey of the first peoples in this area from the moment of creation to the present day. The artifacts are rich and varied. When I was there a young man was cataloging many pieces and packing them to be sent to the University of Victoria for dating. I talked to him for a while. Very interesting work. I revived a dream I have always had to be an archaeologist. It’s funny, when I was young I pictured myself in Egyptian tombs but now, I would be content to look for evidence of early habitation especially in the north. I will put that one aside for now but who knows. Maybe when I get home…..
I came back to the house to do some work on my upcoming presentation and then it started to rain. Of course the laundry was still outside so I raced out to get it. Rain came down hard for a bit but now it is just showering in a way that will set the garden dancing. It is supposed to go on overnight and then get nice again til Sunday or Monday and then restart. I hope the firefighters in the province are getting some relief but I think that they are not supposed to. I was thinking that I might go camping on Texada Island on Monday or Tuesday. I think I will skip that this time if it is going to rain, although maybe I will just go to Canadian Tire and get at tarp so that I can sit and carve out of the weather. I will have to see which way the wind blows.
Until next time then. Goodnight.
I’ve been reading your blog faithfully and enjoying the trip vicariously. Wish I was there with you, but then again the 2 dogs and 8 parrots would take up a lot of room in the van! LOL But hey, no goats anymore! There are a lot of goat breeders/show ers out there and around Canada. Did you bring your phone list? It might make you feel at home in a barn for a bit anyway, love the pics along the way… keep enjoying the trip… thinking of you! Hugs Jill
Lots of room for 2 dogs and 8 parrots…as long as they don’t all need seat belts. V
