I went sailing and am alive to tell the tale. Well, I wasn’t worried that I wouldn’t survive, not really. I just remember my last sail. I got so sea sick that I didn’t enjoy it at all.
We started out at 3:00 on the good ship Quetzal (that is the name of a parrot like bird from central America) a Catalina 27. Linda, the first mate is just learning the ropes (literally) and so Laura was teaching her how to wo(man) the lines. It was her fouth time out as a sailor. I was impressed and started to wonder if I could learn a bit of this craft too….but for the time, I was a passenger and did my best to stay out of the way.
The air was pretty still for sailing but once we got out of the marina we did get a slight breeze and as the evening drew near it did pick up bringing with it a bit of choppy water. That is when I thought things might get bad for me…but they didn’t.
We didn’t go far but I was able to experience the silence of the wind in the sails once we were out of the harbour far enough to turn off the little motor. I began to wonder why anyone wants an expensive gas engine on their boat. It was wonderful.
Seeing Powell River from the water was a different perspective. I got a good look at the boats that have been beached to create a break water for the mill area of the town.
All in all, I would say that my sailing experience was a success. When we got to the dock, Linda broke out the wine and we all had a glass. Then we headed back to her house for dinner and some great company. I watched the sun start to go down from her window on the hill. Powell River sure knows how to put on a good sky.
This morning I am getting ready to move to another location in Powell River. Tell you about that tomorrow if I have internet.
oh my gawd look at you the queen of car sickness sitting there smiling no less with all that water under you!!!
glad it worked out and you got to enjoy it.
Next thing you know you’ll be finished travelling across Canada and then you will be setting sail around the world.
