Today dawned bright with a cool north west wind. I woke up and as I boiled my tea water I watched the humming birds outside the kitchen window scrabble over the feeder, complaining in irritated chirps when another one sidled up to the bar for a sip. I had a sore throat so had and extra helping of vitamin C.

Karen, Evan and Holly decided to take me out and show me the town. We all put on wind breakers and headed out. I was amazed at the variety of different landscapes that Sayward has to offer from flood plains, to mountains, ocean and of course forests.

First we drove through town, over a single lane Baily bridge and to the waterfront where I had a great view of the narrows of the Johnstone Strait. I couldn’t be sure but because of the frothing white caps on the water it seemed to me that there was a wicked current through there caused by the tide passing between close land masses. There were no boats to be seen while we were there but I have to say, I couldn’t imagine me paddling my kayak in those rough waters. Karen assured me that kayakers do enjoy it there though.

After that we headed into the woods for a hike. We saw everything from tide flats to thick woods. The sounds and smells of the woods and salt water combined with the wind were energizing. I felt like I could have walked all day. All of my hiking companions seemed to enjoy themselves as much as I did. One huge tree with a big split in it caught my attention. Here it is:

After the forest walk we stopped for ice cream…poor Vincent missed out this time, and then went to visit Glenn Greensides, an internationally known wood carver. He took us into his workshop, showed us what he was working on and generously offered me some bits of cedar which I had to decline…I really have to carve what I have before I can pile more into Vincent.

After we got home I took sat down and tried to reload my BC ferries experience card. That is not as easy as you would think it might be but I managed to get it done. Then a quick call home to Fred, dinner and a great evening. Karen and I sat hunched over a map trying to figure out what day I would be in Tofino so she could tell her friend when I would be coming. Those of you who have tried to pin down my plans know that she was getting pretty frustrated with me before the end but, I think we have it. I will keep you posted.
