Written the Evening of Aug. 2 from the town of Queen Charlotte on Graham Island
I am staying at the home of Alexander and his son Zander in Queen Charlotte which is often refered to as Charlotte. They live in a beautiful cabin on the beach. The view from here is great. I will find it hard to sleep with with the almost full moon reflecting in the water outside of my window.
I arrived at the ferry this morning with a knapsack packed tight with everything I could imagine needing for the 4 days I would spend on the Island. It was not as heavy as I might have imagined (what was I forgetting that was surly critical) but heavy enough. When I got there, I tucked Vincent amongst some other vehicles that were waiting for their owners and I went to register my passage. Looking back Vincent looked stoic but not happy. At the counter I asked the question. All fares for this ferry need to be pre booked and the line up was long but, yes, there was room for Vincent on board. I bought a drive on fare. Oh, I know I shouldn’t have. I couldn’t afford it but I was worried about leaving all of my stuff in the parking lot for days on end and the anxiety I felt about having to hike and walk every where on the Island was lifted immediately. Having Vincent gave me other options if my Couch Surfing contact didn’t work.
The ferry trip takes about 7 hours and I brought a book with me but as it turned out, once we hit open water, my old motion sickness reared its ugly head and I was not able to read. It was quite cold in the deck. What an experience for my body which has only had over heating for what seems like months. Luckily I had anticipated that and was dressed for it. I spent most of the time sitting on the deck in a corner out of the wind where I could see the waves.
I think I mentioned waves to you before. It is very different to be on a boat out in the water than to be watching waves roll onto to the shore. Out in the water they seem to have an energy and life that is entertaining to watch. It is as if they arre diving, rolling and playing out there. My eyes joined the game and I could almost see them diving and circling back to do it all over again. The water kept changing and frolicking as the sun moved across the sky. I spoke to several people on board, especially a woman from California who is a ‘seer’ and was going to the Queen Charlottes to be close to the power and energy said to be there, and a man who had ridden his bike from Smithers to get away from his cell phone for a while. There was also a woman whose was going to visit her friend who had sold everything back home to stay on the Islands forever.
When I got off of the ferry the sun was low and I found that it shone in my eyes as I tried to find the place I was going. It took a bit and I had to ask directions once but finally I was here and welcomed into Alexander’s amazing world. More on that later.
Tomorrow I am going to try to find internet on the island so I can post this and then go and see what I can see. Vicki
It sounds beautiful and looks beautiful and you have hardly stepped on the Island yet…and the people you met! It sounds like a place I would love to be. A seerer, for the incredible energy, getting away from a cell phone and some one who had sold everything to move there forever. What an amazing place to be…no wonder you had to get there. Sounds like a good move taking Vincent…he is probably much happier and you will be able to enjoy your self with out worry….how sensible of you.
Can’t wait to hear and see more.
