As I write this I am passing a white lighthouse with a red roof sitting on an outcropping of rocks. There are sail boats drifting by. Not too many have their sails up so there must be very little wind but the ferry is speeding along and my hair is blowing. The sun is shining and it is a perfect day. I am leaving Vancouver Island for the mainland. I have enjoyed myself so much on the Island that I feel a little lost as I head out onto the limitless mainland. There are places I missed in my quest to see the whole island, places I would have loved to see and places I know that I will return to. There are new friends in so many places. OOOO I feel a sense of loss as I turn my back on all of that.

My last few days were spent in Victoria with Marty and family. I had been to the area several times before and so there was nothing that I felt a pressing need to see which was great because Marty and I spent hours talking. It is funny that the years apart don’t seem to separate us at all. Our time together was the mixing and consumption of a creative soup. I think I can speak for both of us when I say we came away with new ideas for our businesses and for the way we live our lives. What fun.

I don’t want to sound like we were all work We laughed, songs were sung and listened to and we took time to eat and sleep. One day Marty was volunteering at a performance of the new Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre and she was able to get me a ticket for the performance. The troupe was doing “Death of a Salesman” which I had read but had never seen. WOW! It was powerful and strongly acted. I was swept away into the despair of the family. I think the performance was almost 2 ½ hours and it just swept by. While Marty was setting up her volunteer station to serve tea to the theater goers, I wandered around Chinatown and was able to take in part of a lunch time Jazz concert. I don’t know who the singer was but she was very talented and her voice could be heard over traffic and the noise of the city. What a great addition to any down town.

Yesterday we spent lots of time sitting in the shade on the back deck enjoying the beautiful summer weather. When we realized how long we had actually been sitting, talking we decided to go for a walk on the beach. Marty took me out for a beautiful evening stroll through Arbutus Park and down the stairs to the beach where we found some drift wood seats and sat down to talk some more with the soothing sounds of the lapping water. Ummm. I love island life.

This morning I got up early and headed out at 9 hoping to catch the 11 o’clock ferry. I knew there would be some wait, it is after all Friday and I had no reservation but the 12:00 o’clock ferry would be fine too. Imagine my surprise when I actually made the 10 o’clock one.

Now, as I look up from the screen I can see mountains. In the distance there is a cruise ship heading north. I wonder where it is going. As for me, I am going to visit my Uncle in Pitt Meadow again for the last time as I head out toward the rest of the province. I won’t be back in the Vancouver area this year…although I have learned that I should never say never…. I have some shopping to do to replenish my supplies. The map shows the road ahead to be fairly unpopulated so Vincent wants to have his fluids and tires checked and maybe a little rearranging for the coming weeks. My next stop after Vancouver will be Whistler at least for a day and then…who knows. Talk again when I am back on the road if I have internet connections.
